EISRIESENWELT (ICE WORLD): www.eisriesenwelt.at
Experience a difference side of the Alps!
Werfen is home to the largest natural ice cave in the world – the Eisriesenwelt!
See the ice palace in its crystalline beauty. The cave, which stretches over 40 km, is the result of limestone erosion within the interior of the Tennegebirge mountain range and frozen water from melting snow that has dripped into the cave. A truly unique natural phenomenon!
GROSSGLOCKNER HOCHALPENSTRASSE (GROSSGLOCKNER ALPINE ROAD): www.grossglockner.at
Take an unforgettable journey over Austria’s highest mountain, the Großglockner. The Großglockner alpine road lies 3,788m above sea level. The panorama trip offers some of the most spectacular views of the Alps. Immeasurable beauty awaits you at the top. Kaiser-Franz-Josef-Höhe is the highest point on the Großglockner alpine road. From here you can admire the stunning vista of the Pasterze glacier, the longest glacier in the Eastern Alps.
SALZBURG CITY: www.stadt-salzburg.at
Salzburg, the state capital, is only a 50 minute drive from the hotel. Mozart’s city certainly has a lot to offer. We highly recommend the Hohensalzburg Fortress, Festival Hall (Festpielhaus), Pferdeschwemme (royal horse trough), Mirabell Gardens and naturally Mozart’s birthplace. Other places of interest include various museums, the famous Getreidestraße, the pedestrianised shopping street and the many traditional cafes. Just outside the gates of the city you will find Hellbrunn Castle, a royal summer residence famous for its trick fountains and impressive zoo.
HOHENWERFEN CASTLE: www.salzburg-burgen.at
High above the Salzachtal Valley, nestled between Tennengebirge and Hagengebirge mountain ranges sits a 900 year old castle and fortress.
A visit to Hohenwerfen castle will prove the ideal excursion for adventurers and culture buffs. There is so much history ingrained in the walls of the castle and so much to enjoy. Attractions include a guided tour of the fortress, weapons exhibition, romantic castle tavern, medieval shop, historic Falconry Centre with daily flight demonstrations, the first Austrian Falconry Museum and other special exhibitions.
KRIMML WATERFALLS: www.krimmler-wasserfall.at
The Krimml Waterfalls - a unique natural wonder of the Hohe Tauern National Park.
Crashing down the mountainside in three powerful tiers from a height of 380 m, the Krimml Waterfalls (Krimmler Wasserfälle) is undoubtedly one of the most impressive natural spectacles. The waterfalls in the Salzburg province are the highest in Europe and the fifth highest in the world. In 1967 the Krimml was awarded the Diploma of Protected Areas by the Council of Europe, and in 1983 it became a part of the Hohe Tauern National Park. Families can stroll comfortably along the 4 km long experience trail. There is also a national park information centre and info display boards at the foot of the waterfalls.
SALT WORLD SALZBURG: www.salzwelten.at
The name Salzburg (salt castle) is derived from the salt (salz) mines of Dürrnberg, south of the city. It was this “white gold” that archbishops used to finance the construction of baroque buildings in the old part of the city. The salt lake at Salzwelten (Salt World) sheds light on thousands of years of Salzburg history.
The mine was shut down in 1989 when rising costs and fierce global competition meant that the business was no longer profitable. Now a museum, the mining tunnel in the Salzwelten stretches over 15 km.
After a short stroll past the historic miners’ slide (the Klaus-Rolle) and other mining exhibits you will cross the border into Bavaria, Germany. And that’s where the real fun begins! Here you and your family will be able to whiz down a 27 m long slide, deeper and deeper into the depths of the mountains and back into time. The Salzburg Salzwelten is, without doubt, a fascinating adventure for the whole family.
